Just like you learnt to brush your teeth every morning and you continue to do so for the rest of your life, all good habits and practices must start from home. If you make a mistake, someone will help you to correct yourself and if you practice it at home, the good practices will come to you automatically even when you are not at home.
There are many ways to be polite, here we will look at a few words which help to show that we are well brought up and polite.
You already know when to say ‘Thank You’, ‘Excuse Me’, ‘Please’ and ‘I am Sorry’, but do you say these to your parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents and helpers at home? If not, please do start today itself. This will help you to automatically say the magical words even when you are at school, a class, at a park, at a friend’s house or even on the street.
Here are three more for you to learn and practice from today:
‘May I’ instead of ‘Can I’ – If you wish to get permission from an adult, use the words ‘May I’ as they are more polite and meaningful. You can say ‘May I speak to my friend?’ or ‘May I please have a piece of chocolate?’.
Pardon or Beg Your Pardon instead of ‘What?’ – If you were unable to hear what someone told you or if what was said was not clear, you need to say ‘Pardon’. You can also say ‘I am sorry, I did not understand what you said’, but you should avoid saying just ‘What?’.
No, Thank You instead of shaking your head– It is perfectly alright for you to refuse something that is offered to you, but you must do so politely. Instead of shaking your head silently and turning your face away, please smile beautifully like you usually do and say ‘No, thank you’.
