Serving Guests

For those of you who thought that plonking whatever you have in your larder in front of any guest is fine, I have news. Here are three pertinent questions with answers which will give you a crash course on the subject.

01.Who is served first?
It is always the lady that is served first. If there is more than one lady amongst your guests, start with the most senior and work your way to the younger ladies. Gents of all ages can await their turn.

02.What is served first?
Generally, a starter or a snack is served first. A refreshing beverage or a glass of water can be served as people arrive, especially on sultry days in the tropics. It is polite to inquire and provide a beverage as required.
Be mindful of dietary habits and concerns of your guests. Don’t tempt diabetic patients with warm home made brownies and keep the peanuts away from those who are prone to allergies.

03.How is it served?
Provide side plates or paper serviettes for your guests to hold on to the snacks that are served. This will help to collect the crumbs as well – nope, it does not make it look like you want to make sure that your house is spotless. In their minds, they want to make sure they eat in an orderly fashion and don’t spill all over the place.
Serve the guests and keep the rest of the serving platter on a table for them to help themselves. When placing the tray down, invite everyone to pick from it as they wish.
