Do you know when to say ‘Excuse Me’? Do you say it when you should? Here is a list of places where you need to say ‘Excuse Me’. I am sure you already do, but if you don’t please start from today.
01. When you want to talk to someone who is talking to someone else – Please go up to the person, wait a few minutes and say ‘Excuse Me’. Then wait for the person to show that he or she is ready to talk to you.
02. When you have finished a meal and want to stand up – Please say ‘Excuse Me’ when you need to leave the dining table. Even if you have not finished and need to go for a short while, please say ‘Excuse Me’, so that people know that you are leaving the table.
03. When you want to leave a room – If you and your family or friends are talking or playing somewhere and you want to go to the bathroom or you want to go out of the group, please say ‘Excuse Me’.
04. When you want to talk to someone who is on the phone – If someone is on the phone and you want to talk to them, try to wait until the call is over. If it is taking a long time, you can get their attention by politely saying ‘Excuse Me’ and asking for what you need.
If someone is busy, reading a book, cooking, doing gardening or even relaxing, please say ‘Excuse Me’ before talking to them.
05. When a teacher is in a class – If you need to speak to your friend while a teacher is in the class, please ask for his or her permission. If you need to ask the teacher a question while he or she is teaching, please raise your hand and say ‘Excuse Me’. Once you are allowed to ask the question, please stand up and ask the question.
It also helps to add the word please if you know the other person is going to be disturbed by you. You can say ‘Please Excuse Me’ and speak to the person.
